Our Front Lawn October 20Th
Weather: Some of the coldest air of the season is over the area, a Cold Night is ahead for Monday night some places of the north could see temperatures as low as the mid 20s Cold, Below freezing weather is likely for all of the 6 county area. It looks like we are going into a cool weather pattern because it will remain cool though-out the week. Tuesday looks like the nicest day with Sunshine and highs in the low 50s, Wednesday a large weather system will begin to effect the area most of this system should slide off to the south. but it will bring a chances of Showers along with cool weather. Highs on Wednesday are only expected to be in the upper 40s to low 50s, but upper 40s are more likely for the high on Wednesday. Wednesday Night, it will be cold and wet with a chance of showers best chance of showers south, all areas will have temps in the mid 30s. The Cool cloudy weather will stay around into Thursday, highs will only be in the mid to upper 40s with the best chance of 50s south. it looks like this cool weather pattern will stay. with nigh time lows getting into the 20s and mid 30s every night though Thursday night.
Snowy Winter? A cold snowy winter ahead? it's nearing the End of October and normally most of Northwest Wisconsin gets at least half an inch of snow, by the 31st. So whats ahead for this winter? Only time will tell but, most forecasters are saying we will have a snowier then normal winter! Also forecasters are saying it we should have a cold winter also, with the coldest part of the winter earlier in the season. I will be watching this and bringing Snowfall reports data to my Blog be sure to check my Priep Totals! that's where my Snowfall information will be.
Very cold weather not too far to come? It looks like the weather could get Very cold in the next upcoming week. although it's still in the early forecasting stage it looks like HIGHS could be in the 30s in some places also it looks like we will have our first chance of SNOW with that cold air mass the chance is not high but the chance is there. This will be something to watch closely more on this to come!

I like all this snow talk! I am looking forward to this Winter season.
Hey D, what do you think about the Climate Prediction Center's (NOAA: CPC) winter forecast (Dec, Jan, Feb - DJF) forecast?
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=18761&source=0
50% chance of warmer-than-average temperatures may mean the snow stick on the ground very well.
Any thoughts on the direction we may be heading?
Correction: meant to say "won't stick on the ground very well."
I think the winter will start out cold and snowy but then warm up, but then Again thats just my guess! it's always fun to guess! did you guys see the forecast for early next week!!! Snow if IN THE FORECAST for Sunday and Mondays high is 38!!! cold weather is about to come in!
I actually have no idea what this winter might have waiting for us. After a cool and dry summer, I could see a warm winter. I can also imagine an average ("normal") winter - cool and snowy. Guess we can only prepare ourselves for the worst and see how it plays out.
I just read that Madison's average date for first snowfall is Oct 25, while in Milwaukee it is Oct 28th. Anything next week would be right on time.
If not snow, some graupel would be fun :) NWS Milwaukee's discussion this afternoon included this clip:
.LONG TERM...
SUNDAY- HEIGHTS CAVE IN AS STRONG UPPER TROUGH DIGS SOUTHEAST ACROSS
MIDWEST. 500 MB HEIGHTS FALL TO ABOUT 540 METERS BY EVENING WITH
850 MB TEMPS AROUND -6C. HIGH TEMPERATURES COULD BE IN THE
MORNING. ALSO LIKELY TO GET QUITE UNSTABLE WITH STRONG LOW LEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND SHOWERY PRECIPITATION THAT WOULD TURN TO WET SNOW
AT NIGHT.
MONDAY-
850 MB TEMPS CONTINUE TO FALL TO ABOUT -8C SO TEMPERATURES WILL
STRUGGLE TO REACH LOWER 40S. LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL BE
ADIABATIC...SO ANOTHER CONVECTIVE SHOWER DAY WITH COLD RAIN AND
PERHAPS WET SNOW FLAKES AND EVEN GRAUPEL POSSIBLE.
WTF is graupel?

I now know! Thanks N. :)
And... about this Winter. I feel it will be nothing like the past two I've observed. Some wheres in between I'd reckon. Oh, and an actual link for the graupel.
Graupel is fun stuff :)
Sometimes the difference between hail & graupel is a fine line, especially when graupel can be accompanied by some thunder and lightning (even some thundersnow).
The few times I've experienced some good graupel leads me to believe graupel is noticably softer than hail, and I've never seen it larger than pea-sized.
On a slightly related note, it looks like the high terrain of the south shore of Lk Superior may see some hefty lake-effect snow by the end of this weekend!! NWS Marquette is advising on wind gusts to 50 mph on the Keweenaw Peninsula too. November coming in like a lion?? ;)
I sure wish I could head up to MQT this weekend. I love seeing Lake Superior all stirred up!
I do not know if I've ever experienced graupel...
If you were in GB on 5 December 2001, there was a graupel event.
I was in NE GB near Danz and University Ave at the time and it was quite a storm.
Sometime around 6p a line of strong/severe t-storms rolled through town, started as rain and then went to graupel as the temperature dropped rapidly (wunderground shows from 60 down to 39 F). I remember shoveling 3 inches of graupel off the driveway once it stopped. I don't have any pictures but it was almost pea-sized.
