Cold late January, Temperature Report, Friday Morning Lows.

Cold Late January Day, January 29th.

Well another Cold January Day across Wisconsin, as a Arctic High Pressure sat over the area, Thursday, Highs barely made it into the single Digits for highs, I recorded a high of 5.F above zero, Under Sunny Skies. This made for a Cold night Thursday Night into Friday Morning, Temperatures dipped well below Zero in some spots Middle 20s below Zero were reported! This was under Clear Skies, and a Bright, Near Full Moon! The Moon was quite noticeable Bright! it is easy to see stuff at night with such a bright Moon, and snow cover! Here is a list of Reported lows Friday Morning.

The coldest reading came out of Minong, where a low of -24.F was reported! elsewhere temps were mainly in the teens Below Zero. The warmest location was Menomonie at -8.F High Friday made it into the Low to Mid teens, My high was 17.F, It was a Cool day but you can definitely tell the Sun is starting to rise higher in the sky, The sun has a Warmth to it not felt in earlier in this month, Also it stays light quite a bit later, Were gaining 2 minutes of light each day!

2nd Daffodil/Tulips project update + new addition!

Daffodil/Tulip Project January 27th.

Well it's been a month since I started my Spring bulb project. and everything is going great so far, the bulbs are respond good to the cold treatments, they are growing leaf buds, and forming roots, They will continue to develop roots through the rest of the winter as we slowly approach spring!
This is a close up of the Tulips These are the Red ones, these ones epically seem to be responding to the cold treatment! it's hard to believe that in in about 2 full moths from now, I'll be planting these in the ground! depending upon when the snow melts.

Here's a close look at how the Daffodils are doing, These are the common Yellow colored ones, ones of my favorites.

Here is a picture of the new additions to my project! while stopping by Walmart today, Even though it's last minue, I saw that they had bulbs on Sale for $2 a bag! which included 50 daffodils, and 16 Hyacinths just $2 each, I just couldn't pass that up! they have been sitting on the self for awhile so some of the Daffodils may not bloom, but I have high hopes for the Hyacinths, This is the first time I've tried Hyacinths in this project!

Now With more then 100+ bulbs in the fridge this year, It will make for one beautiful upcoming spring! please continue to visit for more updates as I continue to update the process of my project through the rest of the Winter.

I would also like to state that I am now a Student of Wisconsin Indianhead Technical Collage in New Richmond! after being Home schooled for many years before, and completing my Clayton High school online courses, I am now going for my High school G.E.D, which is nearly as good as a High school Diploma! Then I can see what classes they offer there, I was thinking about looking up what they could offer in plants, not a bad idea is it!?!

Back to January! Colder, Arctic Air settling in Thursday

Regional View.

A cold high pressure from the North behind our last storm system will bring us back to January, More clouds will be spread through out the upper midwest Wednesday, but Thursday, Arctic air will settle in and provide cold temps across the entire upper midwest, with sunny Arctic sunshine. Friday will be dry and Sunny highs moderating a bit.

Local View.
Wednesday we will likely have some more clouds spread through the area, but I believe we will have partly cloudy to partly sunny skies, winds will be quite cold from the Northwest. Thursday, Things clear out as Arctic air slides south, It's back to January as Highs on Thursday will only make it to the upper single digits for highs, this will make for a Cold Thursday Night, lows will fall well below zero, around -10 -15 temperatures are likely across the area. Friday things will not warm up much, But the cold airmass will begin to moderate some, Highs will likely make it to upper single digits to very low teens. Skies will be Sunny, Friday night will still be cold with lows below Zero.

Wednesday, Cool, Cold northwest winds, Partly Sunny to Partly Cloudy skies, Highs in the low teens. Wednesday Night, Cold lows in the lower single digits below zero.

Thursday, Cold, Sunny with highs in the upper single digits. Thursday Night, Cold, with Clear Skies, lows falling to the upper to mid teens below zero.

Friday, a bit warmer, but cold, highs in the upper single digits to very low teens. Friday Night, Cold, lows in the upper teens below zero.

Looking Ahead.
looking ahead, temps will moderate fairly quick for the up coming weekend, it looks like by Sunday highs will reach to upper teens. then early next week Monday the 1st the models show a system passing to the north, That could spreads some light snows over the area, likely minor accumulations, behind that colder air for middle of next week, then it shows light snow chances for late next week still cool, then by the 6th to 8th, the models show a fairly active period for snow, it shows a series of clipper systems with minor accumulations. So all in all, the models show a cool week ahead with a few chances at light snows, Remember as always, This will change so return for farther information though the week.

What a Mess! Storm System Report. Rain/Snow over the weekend!

Rainy Conditions January 23th

We had a messy weather storm system which passed over the weekend. Actually it was very complex storm system, It brought every preip type in the book practically! We got Freezing Rain, Rain, Sleet, and Snow. Systems That bring Rain in January, are actually not unheard of, but they are not very common, One of the interesting things is, This is the second winter storm system, that brought rain with it along with snow, I've also noticed our weather systems are coming out of the South quite a bit this winter, an El Nino Weather Pattern is partly the cause of this, it seems to be pushing large low pressure systems more north, and there are more frequent weather systems. I remember last year in January when we only had 1 day above 32.F in the entire month! this year so far we've had 7! this is because last year we were stuck in a cold Northwesterly flow.

The first low pressure system past to the West of the area, This dragged warm air ahead of it, and at first brought Freezing Rain Friday Night, we got a coating of ice, This made for very Hazardous travel conditions, later Saturday, it turned to plain old rain! it did mix with wet snow flakes during the day Saturday, before turning back to Drizzle and Rain showers overnight. Actually overnight Saturday Night, we even had a Moderate rain shower!
Moderate Snow Sunday January 24Th

this is where the system got complex, Sunday a second low pressure system came up from MO, and pushed over Eastern Wisconsin, This brought a band of Moderate Snow over all but the very western sections of the 6 county area in my backyard, We got a quick 0.75" of an inch of snow, Warm air was still in place when the second low pressure system passed, the snow was wet and slushy as the temp was between 33.F and 34.F during the entire time of the snow, and actually most of that 0.75" of snow we got was melted off everything by evening. This system brought much more snow up in Northern Wisconsin/ Northeast Minnesota where places such as Duluth,MN reported over 8 inches. This storm system also had some winds to it, but the most windy conditions were Saturday, where my station reported at 31MPH wind gust, on Sunday the winds actually died down. Snow continued on Monday and this snow was powdery, since temps cooled to the lower 20s So in Total so far from this storm system I got 0.22" of rain/wet snowflakes! and 1.75" of snow! it was a interesting system to watch.

Now we are into Monday and Much colder air is finally being brought down across the Upper Midwest, There are Very strong winds behind This weather system, Blizzard Conditions are being reported in Western Minnesota, a 58MPH wind gust was reported there! this system will increase our winds later tonight as cold air continues to be pulled down, winds could gust over 30MPH at times, with this, light snow will continue though evening.

Major weather system. Freezing Rain, Rain and Snow likely for the weekend some Ice and minor snow accumulations.

Regional View.

A large weather system will organize and pass through the Upper Midwest. Right now the models show the low passing mainly to the west, before moving East and Southeast Sunday. This will bring Snow and even just plain old Rain across the Upper Midwest.

Local View.

a Large Weather System will bring a mixed bag of precipitation to our local area, It will start out as Freezing Rain Friday and early Saturday, Then it will change over to plain old Rain Saturday afternoon and overnight, then it will change to Snow on Sunday as cooler air moves in. We will also have Windy conditions with this system This is what it's looking like right now.

Freezing Rain

Freezing Rain will start late Friday night and last into early Saturday, Ice accumulation does look likely, people should still be Very careful on roads, just a little ice on roads can make driving conditions very dangerous. Ice accumulation will likely be around 0.10 but higher accumulation could be possible, if this is the case, people should watch for falling branches from weak, or diseased trees. The best chance of encountering ice on roads will be from late tonight to through Saturday at 12 noon I would say, also Winds will start to pick up from the Southeast Saturday and could be gusty at times.

Rain

This is unusual for late January, but not for these types of weather systems, Saturday Afternoon, Temperatures will rise well above freezing, and freezing rain will turn to just plain old rain, we could get as much as nearly a half inch of plain rain! This on top of our thick snow pack will probably make snow melt very fast, People should watch for some ponding from melting snow and rain. The best chance of rain will be in Central and Southern areas but I believe all locations will see rain, plain Rain will last from Saturday afternoon through Saturday Night, and could even be moderate at times, We will also have Gusty winds from the southeast gusting over 30MPH at times.

Snow

Sunday, Colder air will work into this system and Rain will turn to a wet snow, Minor accumulations are likely, the highest snowfall accumulation will be over Burnett and Washburn Counties, where as much as 3-5 inches are possible. I would say maybe 2-4 inches total accumulation for Southern and Central areas, Rain and Freezing rain will hold down snow accumulations significantly. Snow will be most likely from Sunday afternoon through parts of our Moderate, and could become moderate at times. daily forecast below.

Friday Night, Freezing Rain starting late, more likely in the early morning hours, lows in the upper 20s Breezy winds from the southeast.

Saturday, Freezing Rain early, watch for icy roads and falling branches from weak trees, Freezing Rain changing over to Rain in the afternoon, Rain could me Moderate at times, Gusty southeast winds to near 30MPH at times, Highs in the upper 30s. Saturday Night, Rain Likely Rain could be moderate at times, Gusty southeast winds, lows in the low to mid 30s.

Sunday, Rain early Changing over to a Wet snow late, Minor snowfall accumulations, Highs in the mid 30s, Before temps falling in the afternoon. Sunday Night, Light to Moderate Snow, Lows falling into the low 20s

Monday, Cooler, light snow likely, possible Moderate at times, Total snowfall accumulations 2-5 inches. Highs in the Mid 20s. Monday Night, Colder, Light Snow, before Ending then cloudy, Lows in the mid single digits.

Due to the significance of this system, I'll be updated this forecast through the weekend.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Mild temps continuing light wintery mix possible by Thursday/Friday, a much bigger storm possible for Weekend.

Regional View

Iowa is looking at Significant ice accumulations Wednesday with a system expected to produce rain falling while high temps will remain right around 32.F In that area a Ice Storm is looking pretty likely, Farther north, most of Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin will see partly sunny, to partly cloudy skies. what is left from the ice storm in Iowa will effect places north Thursday and Friday.

Local View.
As a fairly significant Ice Storm effects Iowa for Wednesday, Skies will clear out a bit here in our local area, Mild temps will continue for us as well, With Partly Cloudy to Partly Sunny skies. but Thursday, whats left of the ice storm will move into our area, But this system will weaken as it moves north, so this will leave us with mostly cloudy Thursday, with off and on light freezing drizzle or light flurries, It is expected to remain light. Fog may also be an issue for Thursday, Friday skies will remain cloudy, with Fog possible, light drizzle or flurries will be possible through the early part of the, but it is more likely to be dry then Thursday. skies may clear out a bit Friday in the afternoon. Temps will also be mild for Friday with highs in the upper 20s but if skies clear lows in the lower 30s would definitely be possible. Daily Forecast below.

Wednesday, Partly Cloudy to Partly Sunny, Mild, Highs in the upper 20s. Wednesday Night, Increasing Clouds, Fog possible lows falling into the mid teens.

Thursday, Cloudy, with Light Freezing Drizzle or Flurries possible at any point during the day, Highs in the upper 20s. Thursday Night, Cloudy, light Freezing Drizzle still possible, Fog also possible lows falling to the upper teens.

Friday, Cloudy, with light freezing drizzle or flurries possible early, Then ending, possible some clearing in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Friday Night Partly Cloudy to Cloudy, lows in the low 20s.

Looking Ahead, Major wintry storm possible for this Weekend.
the models are showing a large wintry system possible for this weekend. with this storm on our heels, I will likely needing to be issuing forecasts for this as early as Thursday or Friday. It is likely a Major Winter storm will happen somewhere in the upper Midwest, it's just not completely certain where. Forecasting a Precipitation type will be difficult for this system, because we have a mild air mass already in place. Right now, it appears we will be on the just warm enough side of the system for Freezing Rain. Saturday, possible leading so some icing accumulations, then Sunday it appears like as though colder air will move in that will turn the freezing rain to snow, minor accumulations possible. This system needs to be watched Very carefully. any movements of this system to the East could mean a Major winter snow event, or a possible Freezing rain event. It is not all completely sure at this time that is why it is important for people to come back here or go to the NWS for updates of this potential Major Winery Event.

Neat Frost Pictures.

Frost pictures January 19th

Freezing Fog formed overnight last night, due to the mild temps and still air, This accumulated frost on everything, It was a beautiful site, and made for some Very neat photos, This is one of the thickest freezing fog accumulations, I've ever seen!

Woods north of our house, everything was covered, it definitely made everything look different. I have to admit, winter can be cold and dark, But every once and while, it can be beautiful. as you can see the frost is still real thick, and this picture was taken after noon today, It looks like the frost will last much of the day!

Now this I thought looked real neat! this is a Corkscrew Willow, the branches are grow naturally curled like a corkscrew opener! and the curled branches covered in frost was very cool looking! this tree was planted last Spring. The frost is, must have been at least half inch thick!
